It’s getting chilly out there, and you know what that means! Time to ensure your home and vehicle are prepped for winter weather. At Winston’s Chimney Service, we’re here to help you out with some great tips! Read up, so that you’re prepared for anything!

For Your Vehicle

Driving around on snowy or icy roads can prove to be challenging at times. Even the most experienced drivers can struggle to maintain control in bad conditions! Stay ahead of the game by taking some precautionary measures before embarking on any trips this season.

First things first, have your tire treads inspected and ensure your wheels are properly inflated and rotated. It’s also a good idea to make sure your wiper blades are in prime condition. If they aren’t, have them replaced. Along with this, check your windshield wiper fluid, as well as your engine coolant and antifreeze. These are all easy steps that will end up saving you a lot of time, money, hassle, and stress when out and about this winter.

Also, have you ever considered putting a winter survival kit inside of your car? Blankets, extra warm clothes, a flashlight, a spare phone or charger, and some sand (for traction) are just some of many things you can keep in your car in case of an emergency. Be sure to look up even more ideas based on your area and specific needs!

For Your Home

Your home also needs to get ready for winter! Frozen/burst pipes, some extra insulation, and hiring out for some annual maintenance can make all the difference in saving yourself from costly damages or uncomfortable living conditions. Let’s start with the pipes. Drain and disconnect all outdoor water sources and consider using insulation sleeves for pipes that are located in colder areas of the home.

You’ll also want to make sure your gutters are cleaned out, your home’s heating vents are well-exposed, and that your roof is in good condition. This is done, should you face some heavy snowfall. Plus, of course, have our CSIA certified experts come out to inspect your fireplace! We’ll make sure your system is cleaned out and ready for use, so you don’t have to worry about gas leaks, chimney fires, house fires, or smoke backing up into your home this winter.

Always Play It Safe

If the temperatures outside are extra cold, always proceed with caution. If you don’t absolutely need to go out, don’t. However, if you do, take it slow and easy to avoid losing control of your vehicle on icy roads. Also, if you’re leaving the home, keep others up-to-date on where you are and what your next steps will be. That way, if something goes wrong, they’ll know where you’re at.
